Both Ginger (50 lbs) and Chumley (55) have worn Martingale collars from
day one, and I've never had them slip or get caught on anything.  They
also come off easily when needed.  The only warning is don't grab the
collar by hand and try to pull the dog forward, that's how they come off.

They sell good, solid collars with matching leashes if you want them, in a
variety of colors.  Ginger prefers pink, Chumley is rocking blue at the
moment.

Al, with Ginger, Chumley, and Alfie the Wonder Beagle (who doesn't wear a
Martingale)
