Dog show points are a bit complicated.  Here's as simple a version
as I can come up with.

To become an AKC Bench Champion (which
is the kind of champion most of us are familiar with, as oposed to field
champions and obedience trial champions) a dog must win 15 points.  A
dog wins points by being awarded winners dog or winners bitch, which means
being selected as the best non champion of it's sex and of it's breed at a
show.  Depending on how many other dogs of its breed were in
competition that day and defeated by that dog, he can be awarded anywhere
from 0 - 5 points.  a win worth 3 or more points is called a
"major".  to become a champion, a dog must have won at
least 2 majors under 2 different judges, and must have won at least one
point under a third judge.  By being selected "best of
winners" (the best between winners dog and winners bitch), best of
breed, or best of oposite six to best of breed (or group one or best in
show, but lets be realistic here), it is sometimes possible to win more
points, but under no circumstances can a dog win more than 5 points at a
single show.  Once a dog becomes a champion, he holds that title for
life.  there is no Grand Champion titile in conformation.

What you see of dog shows on TV is the part of competition that takes
place after all this part of the show is over and done with.  In each
breed (or variety in the case of some breeds like poodles and dachshunds),
there is one dog awarded best of breed or Variety.  that dog then
continues on in competition, competing in the group competition.  All
160 or so breeds/varieties are divided up into 7 groups based more or less
on function - Sporting (hunt feather), Hound (hunt fur), Working, Terrier,
Toy, Non-sporting, herding.  the best of breed wionners in each breed
compete with the other best of breed winners of it's group for best in
Group.  The first place winner in each of the 7 groups than compete
agains each other for Best in Show.  It is the Group and Best in show
comptetions that are usually shown on TV.
