[Dailydrool] Rollover technique

I am sure you have heard me say this before but I will say it again-- that
placing a dominant dog on his back and holding him there is an incredibly
dangerous method to use, and I wish Milan would stop advocating it. He's a
buff, strong guy with a lot of determination. As far as I know, one of the
very fastest ways to get your hand and face removed is to use that method on
a truly frightened or aggressive dog. Bassets do not usually fall into this
category. When it was really in vogue I have used it and I have to say you
better have really good reflexes and be able to read the dog like an open
book. You do that to a dog who thinks you are going to hurt him and suddenly
he is not just being willful, he is fighting in fear of his life and you
have a very explosive situation on your hands.
It takes someone who is genuinely an Alpha-- not someone who wants to be or
thinks he might be, but someone who IS, and strong hands and arms and the
ability to know just how far to push it. Don't forget: once you have that
upset dog on the ground, you have to let him up sometime. Being on their
backs with belly exposed is probably THE most vulnerable position for a
dog,and many of them will fight to the end to get up.

I am sure some people-- maybe many-- heartily disagree with me, but I think
there are safer ways to show a dog who is in charge.
