For those who have asked, I just got a call from the vet.  He made it 
through surgery just fine.   His blood work was fine but they did a 
light sedation instead of a full anesthesia to be safer for him.  I'm 
running the heartworm test at my regular vet though because he's about 
half the price.  I'll make the 4 hour round trip in the morning to get 
him and bring him back to the couch where he belongs.
