Our Belvedere had elbow dysplasia when he came to us at five years old--and it looked pretty bad. Before we adopted him, I asked Tri-State to have a vet look at him. We visited a wonderful orthopedist, who thoroughly checked him out and told us that he'd be OK unless he got arthritis there as he aged.

I firmly believe that bassets, especially young bassets, need to be seen by an orthopedist who is familiar with basset conformation. If your rescue has an orthopedist who regularly sees their dogs, I'd suggest you go there.

Bassets just have such funky legs, I'd be nervous about letting just anyone make a diagnosis. If you can't get a specialist, certainly get someone who has seen plenty of basset legs.
