Elizabeth has pointed out something that we all too often forget or ignore,
which is that every Veterinarian out there has things he(or she, but mine is
usually the he half) are good at and things he is not as good at. My
responsibility as an owner and advocate for my pet is to be aware of this
and to draw the line when things are not going well with the treatment we
are using at that time.
Second opinions are almost NEVER a bad idea. Specialists abound and are
considerably better versed in a single field than your Vet can hope to be.
We have specialists who come to the clinic because we cannot offer that kind
of expertise among the regular staff, skilled as they may be.
We have an Orthopedic Surgeon who comes down, altho we do a lot of fairly
standard Ortho procedures.
We have a Cardiac specialist who brings her own portable echocardiagram
machine for the hearts that need advanced care
We have a Dentist who can come in and put in caps and do root canals...
We have a Behaviorist who can be called to consult.
And we make referrals all the time to the University Hospitals-- Illinois,
Purdue, Wisconsin--- all within about a 2 to 3 hour drive-- for cases that
require even more care and diagnostic skill.
Never be afraid to ask for a second opinion, or a referral to a specialist.
If your Vet has a problem with this, then his ego is bigger than his skills
level, and it is time to find a new Vet.

Drool to all in need, may nobody need a Vet this week at all!!
