[Dailydrool] And Then There Were Three

This morning Storybook Bassets lost it's most senior girl. Maggie Mae (named for Rod Stewart's great song) peacefully departed this earth at approximately 10:00 a.m. She'd been battling a UTI that had suddenly taken a turn for the worse yesterday and then we were up all night with that and bloody diarrhea so I knew it was time.

Maggie was my first rescue girl. The basset most non-show basset folks thought was my prettiest. I always had to laugh as the more I learned about correct conformation, the more I knew that for a basset she wasn't all that pretty. But she was a love and a sweeter dog would have been hard to find. She had a rough start in life --physically and mentally abused and then treatment-resistant heartworms on top of that. I had to talk rescue into giving her to me. Sylvie always said it was when I said to her "if she's only got 6 months left to live, let her live it in the best home possible where she'll be loved and treated royally." Well that six months was more than 10 years. I don't know if I was the "best home" but no one could have loved her more and universal opinion was that she was spoiled rotten.

I'm trying to hang onto the fact that she has been reunited with Dodger -- her beloved companion and the one who truly turned her around. When she came to live with us, he leant her some of his own strength, courage and self-confidence until she could find her own. Again and again when I fostered dogs, she would do the same for them. It was always Maggie who could draw them out and Maggie who taught them to be whole again.

She is also reunited with Morgan and Oliver and my parents. I'm sure my dad had something special waiting for her when she got there. And like Dodger who sent me a shooting star to let me know he was all right, when I turned on the Jeep to leave the vet's, Rod Stewart's Maggie Mae began to play.
