Hi everyone,

I have a six year old male basset named Jake. He developed some skin
problems very suddenly over the course of two days. Right under his front
two leg pits, he has scratched and itched the skin so much that the area is
oozing and bleeding. After a trip to the vet, he was bathed, and the area
was tested for infection. We were given wash and antibiotics for his eyes,
he is on benadryl 75mg 2 times a day, antibiotics PO, and told to wear a
t-shirt to protect the affected area from licking and scratching. The vet
said that she wasn't going to give him any steroids in case he has a staph
infection. I am just hoping if it is staph, it isn't MRS. I have heard
that dogs are getting this now.

We still haven't heard what the cytology test results are. My wife and I
are really upset because Jake is in apparent pain and distress. On top of
this, we have to leave him at "dog camp" for a couple of days because we
have to go north to Massachusetts to pick up our daughter from college.

One last thing, Jake is overweight...my fault. The vet said that overweight
dogs are prone to developing skin problems. Anyway, this is my wake up
call. I will not give in to giving him so much food and treats.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Sad in Maryland,

Mark and Jake
