If you've moved recently... and used plastic bins, or have stuff in bins
that does nothing for you just "sitting around".. 
 
you could place some bins (heavily weighed down please) from extra small to
small to large.. and thus create stairs... 
 
There's a small one that Walmart sells for 3.50, then the next size up is
4.50.. you'd only need an "extra small" to go in front of the small one..
put some carpet runner on them (the type with rubber backing) and you've got
instant stairs for the average hound.. 
 
Before moving.. I had a 3 inch high wood block, then a 16x16 box filled with
VHS tapes (was very solid) and then one of the medium/large totes.  The boys
had no problems.. it didn't look pretty, but it was cheap (free basically
since there was stuff there that had other purposes)
