You do not need permission to attend a dog show, but you cannot bring your
dog unless your dog is entered as a competitor.
The show you are talking about, Valley Forge, is (I believe) what is called
a Specialty show-- in other words, there will be only one breed there and in
this case, it will be Bassets only. Anyone who owns an AKC registered,
intact Basset may enter a dog or bitch. However, entries for all shows for
competing close several weeks before the show.
You need only bring your wallet (there is usually a parking fee and an
entrance fee) If you have a folding chair, you might want to tuck it in your
trunk in case there are not enough chairs there. You should also buy a
catalog, so you can see what class you are watching and what dog or bitch
you are looking at.
If this the first time you have been to a dog show, try to sit near someone
who has a catalog also and appears to know what is going on He or she will
have a chair, a pen or pencil, a catalog and may also have a dog sitting
with her.He or she may also have bags of Basset stuff. Look for someone
wearing clothing with Bassets on it. Most people at specialty shows are
pretty knowledgeable, and more than happy to explain to you what the class
is and what the Judge looks for.
Because it is a specialty show, you will see classes that are not offered in
an all-breed show, such as Puppy sweepstakes and Veterans.
The dogs you will see at this show and all AKC dog shows are all registered
purebreds and are intact (except maybe in Veterans) This is the breeding
stock for the purebred dog world.
Dog shows are wonderful. You may also find some really neat vendors there
selling everything from food to jewelry and in this case it will be all
Basset stuff.
I hope you go, and I hope you enjoy it.
All-breed shows are a little different. But not much.
