HOUNDS HAVEN IS OFFERING IT'S FALL FUNDRAISER JUST FOR DUKE!!!!!!

Duke's Story:
Duke of Windsor was brought to the attention of Hounds Haven's Intake
Coordinator back in early August. His owner called the rescue deathly
Afraid her "Dukey" would have to be put to sleep as he had been vomiting
And lethargic for the past few days and she could not afford any vet
Treatment. She is confined to a wheel chair, and therefore, couldn't
Get him anywhere. Our Intake Coordinator set off to work finding a
Local volunteer to assess Duke to see if immediate medical attention was
Needed. A caring volunteer and his wife, Scott and Nicole Hruska, met
Duke and his owner. Scott determined Duke needed to be seen immediately
By the vet, as when Scott felt Duke's abdomen there appeared to be an
Object about the size of a golf ball lodged in his intestines. After
Examination, it was determined Duke had eaten two large rocks -- one of
Them was stuck in his intestines and the other was not able to pass any
Farther than the stomach. Duke underwent emergency surgery to save his
Life, but upon getting into the abdomen the vet quickly noticed part of
The intestines looked very black indicating necrosis. The rock had been
In there long enough for the intestines to start dying off. Once the
Rock was removed it was clear Duke had to lose at least a foot of dead
Intestines to save his life. At that point, Duke was one very sick
Hound and the next 48 hours were critical as to whether or not he would
Survive. Well, Duke pulled through that surgery with his Basset spirits
Flying. However, Duke would have NEVER made it this far without the
Care, dedication, and love Scott and Nicole continued to show. Hounds
Haven could not have supported a surgery of this magnitude without Scott
And Nicole making sure Duke had his second chance at life. With nothing
Spared they have paid for Duke's treatment completely to this point.
They are also fostering Duke in his recovery period. Two weeks post
Operative Duke again fell ill and was immediately rushed back to the
Vet, where it was determined he had a large puss filled abscess in his
Abdomen at the site of the reconstruction. Some fluids were drained and
He was put on a strong course of antibiotics and seems to be on the
Mend. BUT upon all of Duke's medical issues with eating the rocks, one
LARGE and LOOMING concern still sits in the way of Duke's future. See,
When Duke was growing his left front ulna grew too long, causing Duke to
Have severe bowing and buckling of his front wrist. His owner, not
Knowing the severity of Duke?s physical situation, opted to not have
It surgically corrected as it should have been. But now, as Duke ages
His leg is literally a ticking time bomb. Duke is constantly buckling
Due to the fact his weight cannot be supported on the wrist joint.
Without the proper orthopedic surgery to correct the ulna, Duke is
Living a life sentence of a few years. If he doesn't receive the
Surgery the arthritis and pain that will set into his joints will be too
Painful for him and he will have to be PTS :0(
