We were called 2 weeks ago by the uncle of an adopter. She passed away unexpectedly from cancer and her basset Bonnie--who had been adopted from us 2 years ago--would need to come back into rescue. We had a brand new foster home waiting for a dog to care for and she just happened to be 30 miles from Bonnie--very fortuitous. So, Jennifer picked up Bonnie and was told that she'd been tested for diabetes but it was negative. She was having trouble controlling herself, though, around the water bowl (drinking massive amounts of water) and peeing everywhere even though she was housebroken. Jennifer, who has a young basset of her own and eager for her first foray into fostering, found out Bonnie has a tumor near her anal glands that was causing trouble so her vet called a specialist to schedule surgery (Jennifer and her hubby wanted to pay for it.) Well, sad news--Bonnie's tumor is cancerous and the cancer has spread to her lungs, so she was given a couple of months at best. Jennifer is very sad--never thought her first foster dog would only get to be with her so short a time. I told her Bonnie was very lucky she came along and that the last few months of her life--before she meets her Mom at the Bridge--will be with people who love her. I offered to bring Bonnie to my house for her last few months but Jennifer says she is so sweet and sad she would really like to keep her there, as difficult as it will be. I sent her my parents' Clover's doggie diapers and she's going to be kept comfortable. Please sling some comforting drool to Jennifer (who is not on the Drool and, believe it or not, had never heard of the Bridge!) and Bonnie (a senior basset girl.)
