[Dailydrool] Response to Frankenpuppy's cysts

I have been reading the Drool since around January and I've seen a number of references to bassets with cysts. I posted once before about my experience with cysts. I've had only one basset hound, Rascal, but he had many many cysts from the time he was about four years old until his death at age 12. They were unattractive, and at least once I think they caused him discomfort, but overall he was okay. I don't know what caused them. The vet tried different antibiotics. Medication may have controlled some of the them but they never entirely went away. If I remember correctly, Rascal got more cysts as he aged. Sometimes the cysts were quite gross and broke open and oozed. Sometimes they dried up; sometimes they remained raw and ugly. Some just remained large hard lumps and were with him until he died. We had the first lump removed and checked. It was benign. Later on, from time to time, the vet checked for mast cell cancer. The tests were negative. As he got older Rascal had so many lumps that the vet said it would be harder on him to undergo surgery to remove them than it was for him to live with the lumps. So he remained a lumpy but much loved fellow until his death.
