[Dailydrool] Smart dogs / dumb dogs

I have to agree with Dawn's comments about bassets weighing the rewards of
disobedience against the consequences, and acting accordingly! Not only
that, but they know how act too! Copper, my 11-year-old has arthritis in
his back legs. He moves very slowly when commanded to do so and has been
known to take 10 minutes to climb the six stairs up to the gate of our
complex. He needs, and uses stairs to get onto the couch, which is his
preferred place to lounge and ignore commands.

However, open a package of deli-sliced turkey meat, his favorite treat, and
he can somehow manage to leap off the couch and be in the kitchen in less
time than it takes to close the door of the fridge.

Bassets are smart, they have the humans trained!
