Dachshunds will do this also.  It's to disguise their scent, so I suppose
it's a hunting dog thing, but don't ask me how that horrendous poop smell
would cause prey not to notice you!!??

Bassets seem to be the only dogs that roll in the most

stinking mess they can find. Dazey did it one day we

were at a nursing home for Fathers Day on the way home.

And Miss Becky's specialty was cowpies.  One day she

was so green and also rolled in a puddle to set it I guess and it was all

caked. She was wondering why noone who usually petted her

didn't. They did a wide berth around her.  So home we went andI  rinsed her
in vinegar after bath.

It was gross.

You never would catch the Airedale or other dogs doing that. They say

bears do it to throw off their scent.

Why bassets do it is beyond me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
