Another option for keeping basset ears out of the food dish is to get a "spaniel or cocker food bowl".  They are stainless steel, narrower at the top, and the ears hang on either side of the bowl.  They come in various sizes up to a quart.  I use them for feeding and water and have no problems with the ears getting in the food.  You can google them and several places carry them.
