Hi Susan -
This may be a little late as I'm catching up on drools. If your friend's vet isn't familiar with this, that's a problem (keep in mind I rarely say something like this). First of all there are plenty of ways to educate oneself - last Sunday and next Sunday I'm spending my days off in educational presentations on updates in surgery and medicine. Secondly this is a somewhat common disease and is discussed at length in vet school.
Here is one extensive article on idiopathic megaesophagus: http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00133.htm
This is where there is no underlying diease causes this and is also the most common.
More good information and causes: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=604&S=1&EVetID=0
Hope this helps!
