My daughter is a long distance runner. She showed up at our K-9 fun
run with her beloved Dolly-a 3 year old basset. As the runners were
stretching out, a large, obnoxious man with a dalmation came over to
us and bellowed "I can't believe you showed up to run with a basset-
how stupid is that-bbwwhhaaahhhaaahaaa!!" All I could reply was "You
are obviously an idiot!" He kept on-pointing to us and shouting
ignorant statements. I simply said to my daughter "Be sure to smoke
his ass" She asked if she could trip him and I said absolutely, which
made her laugh. The only thing working against Dolly is her weight
bracket, she has to run against the bigger dogs which have legs.
Dolly was raised on our farm and was in great shape though. The pack
of runners took off and we moved over to the finish line to cheer
everyone on. I really had no idea how this was going to turn out.
From where we stood, there was a blind bend and heavily wooded so we
had no idea who was where until they came around the corner. The
first place runner was a man who looked like a marathoner with a
border collie. I could hear people start to scream "IT'S THE
BASSET!!"" "RRRUUUNNNN BASSSETTTT!!!!" People went crazy, crowding to
see the phenomenon. She was in a small group with 2 other men-not fat
bastard-he was no where to be seen. Dolly and Amanda placed second.
People were cheering, hugging my daughter and Dolly. Next thing I
know is the spokesperson for Purina is pumping my hand, telling me
about being raised on a farm in Wisconsin and growing up with
bassets. He knew they were sprinters and was so happy to see my girls
win. It was great a feeling! When the awards were handed out the
Purina man said how proud he was to give this award to my daughter
and Dolly, how he loved the breed and knew they could sprint. We got
a cheering round of applause, with some people hollering "where is
the mean guy-he needs to hear this!" Fat Bastard was no where to be
found. We had seen him leaving, looking like he was ready to pass
out. Men helped us carry to 2 large bags of Purina to the truck and
my girls had their trophy. This happened 15 years ago and I will
never forget it.
