I agree with Shirley, invisible fencing is generally just fine. We've had them in two different houses since we moved to Virginia 20 years ago, and have had lots of dogs trained to it successfully, including 5 basset hounds. We did have a hound mix for a short while who would get a running start and just GO - she was a stray and we think she was a hunting dog in her former life, so there was just no containing her. I think she would have found a way out of a "real" fence, too, she was very determined. She fought with the lab we had at the time, so we ended up taking her to the SPCA.

After we got Sweet Sarah, Sarah's breeder called and asked if we wanted to adopt a dachshund who kept digging out of his yard that had a wood fence. She figured the invisible fence was the only way to keep him from getting out :) We didn't want a digging doxie to add to our landscaping, so we declined ;)

The key is in the training! You have to make sure they're well-trained to head for the house when they hear the warning tone - we've always kept them on a leash and trained several times a day for a couple of weeks before we let them out on their own. We don't leave them out if we're not home. Yes, other animals do come in the yard, which is actually fine with us. Cody the doxie comes to visit and get a milkbone every day, and Max, Frank's bff ("best friend forever" in instant-message code), comes over many evenings to play.

We vote "yes" for invisible fences,

Nancy, owned by Uncle Frank the Tank
And Sweet Sarah ATB
