[Dailydrool] Baker Blankie Brigade arrives for New Year

Tonight is the annual New Years Eve Memorial Ranch Run - 

One of  the ceremonies we do on New Years Eve is to tuck the hounds in 
after 
the  running with brand new blankies. This symbolizes the promise of a new 
home  in the new year, as well as restocking our winter blanket stockpile.  
Washing blankies in a high bleach can wear them out fairly quickly - and  
if your someone who has multiple hounds - you know how fast blankets can  
be 
chewed, become threadbare or flat out dissolve.

Blankies have  been arriving by mail, and tonight visitors will be bringing 
even more -  but I have to share this story as it will touch every heart 
that reads it,  as it touches mine annually.

A wonderful hound Droopy scored herself a  family here from the ranch a few 
years back - the Baker Family.
Droopy  has so conditioned them, that when they first read of the new years 
eve  tradition, Dianne called to talk Blankie wishes. In a perfect world 
these  blankies would be polar fleece, double thickness and approx. 36" 
square.  Throughout the year the Baker family buys the fleece in bulk from  
downtown, and sews and sews and sews.... and just before the Holiday, they  
bring 
up the New Years Blankies.

Today was 2010 delivery. It took 2  cars and 4 people. The Baker Blankie 
Brigade.
88 dark blue and silver  blankies are awaiting the hounds this evening - 
coupled with the  Strachan's annual delivery of NYE blankies, and those 
arriving by mail,  with special thanks to Sandi of Red Bay Bassets for 
promoting 
this on the  Facebook pages - every hound will have a new blankie for the 
new 
year  tonight.

There is even a blankie for our new guy - arriving today being  saved from 
euthanasia by UK Bassets - Shelia Adams. An Apple valley 4 year  old 
BEAUTIFUL boy - the last rescue of 2009. May he be the first adoption  of 
2010! 
We have a tradition to uphold after all - from the cold and yucky  shelter 
in Apple Valley - to running, singing, treats and a brand new  quilt 
tonight 
- whatever will "Newcome" think?

I cannot begin to  relay how much this means to every hound.
Tonight, as we remember those no  longer with us here on earth, as the 
hounds run and play in the blue moon  of New Years - jingling and howling - 
and 
we humans sing them to sleep,  snuggle them in and tuck those blankies 
across 
the happy snoring hounds -  we shall sing our nightly song - When you wish 
upon a star. 

May  every hound across the lands enjoy a full belly, a soft hand and a 
warm  
blankie to snooze in the new year.
