Oh, I can feel your pain.  This has happened to me many a time and it hurts
like %^&()!  Here's a trick I learned from my Podiatrist - soak (or put a
compress) in white vinegar, the offending splinter or hair pops right to the
surface and you can take it right out.  I used this trick for removing
splinters from little peoples' hands while I was an elementary school
principal - never a tear was shed.  It is like magic!
