Maybe it's a Basset thing -- drinking seldom but a lot at a time. Of our 
housedogs, 4 drink every now and then, but Ethel Basset seems to drink 
only once or twice a day and stands there lapping FOREVER till she's 
satisfied. She does not have accidents -- but might if we weren't alert. 
Her idea of letting us know she needs to go out is to walk up and down 
the hallway until someone notices and asks, "Hey, Ethel, do you need to 
go out?" The response is a galumphing toward the door.

Weather permitting, the door is always open and a doggy-door in the 
storm door allows freedom of choice -- but if it's raining, Ethel takes 
one look and says, "Something big is already peeing out there and I'm 
not going." Gentle persuasion in the form of a tow chain is then required.
