I saw the movie & read the book and recommend both. While there are a few differences between the two, the basic story is the same. I think this movie & book portray a typical family who, while never learn to be the real pack leaders, truly love this goofy mischief dog. The movie shows the good times as well as some of the struggles with owning a dog. I'm not sure where some of the scenes mentioned in an earlier post (such as beating the dog or putting the dog down to go on a vacation) come from as they were not in the movie or the book. I think the movie goes a long way toward sending the message that dogs are truly a part of our family and are NOT to be discarded like property.
