I have been very vigilant about keeping Rosie's weight down and not letting
her get out of shape, due to the problems being overweight can cause in bassets.
She has a small structure for a basset so I couldn't go by the typical
weight range of a female basset. Her ideal weight is right around 40 lbs. and
that's what she weighs right now. They can develop many of the same health
problems humans develop from being overweight. Their spine is especially at
risk due to having a long back, which is not helped by carrying extra weight.

As others have said, I use green beans and other veggies when I've had to
cut her food back when she's gained a little weight. At one point after my
back surgery she got up to 47 lbs. because she wasn't getting any exercise,
so I gave her less "food" and more veggies and that helped.

Another thing that really helps is exercise. Two types of exercise have helped
Rosie stay in shape. One is playing with other dogs. When they get outside and
really run and play they are burning off a lot of calories in a short time. She
chases and wrestles with the other dogs and it's really good for her. The
good thing is I don't have to do anything except watch and enjoy. I
remember when we got the next puppy after Rosie, Rosie immediately lost 5 lbs.
because she was running around and playing with the puppy.

The other type of exercise is walking, which does require effort on the
human's part. Walking at a steady pace for a prolonged period of time is
really good for a dog, physically and mentally. It's good for us too. Most
healthy, fit bassets should be able to walk at least one mile at a pretty good,
steady clip. Young puppies, older bassets, and bassets out of shape would need
shorter walks to get into condition to do a longer walk. Any amount of walking
is good. When I walk Rosie for exercise I try to keep her from stopping to
sniff (kind of difficult but not impossible). Once we get our mile in, I stroll
around and let her do her sniffing then.

Anita & Rosie the retired agile basset

I had a note yesterday from 2008 BW GM Thelma Lu that not one pawson has
reserved a
lane for her bowl-a-thon. This is NOT acceptable!
Do you live too far away? No problem- send her some paypal moolah instead. $20-
that's it- the
hoomans spend more than that for a drive-thru meal... Give up one not really
needed junk meal this week
and support rescue instead. Or send her a check.
Do you live close enough to go? - www.tristatebassets.org - for info. THEN GO!
Have fun with fellow droolers,
pet lots of bassets- enjoy great prizes, a raffle and pizza. When is the last
time you got 2 hours of bowling,
shoes included, food & drink...all for $20? You get to bring the bassets-
so no worries about leaving them home.
Gear up for the upcoming social season and have some fun. Get rid of the winter
blues with some new friends.
Don't know anyone to go with- that's ok- Ellie will set you up with
others and you will make new friends.

I just want to let everyone know that MoonDoggie also carries fabulous
teas. They come in silk tea bags and are absolutely fabulous. I got
two gift boxes this past Christmas and both people who received them
raved over them. They also carry some wonderful hot chocolate mix.
Donna does such wonderful work in raising money for rescue - lets do
something great for Donna. You may have to email Donna to order the tea
bags, totally worth it.

Funny the topic of bellybutton fuzz came up recently. I had been noticing an
abundance of that very thing with my hounds. I think the amount of fuzz you
have is related to: The fabric of the bed and or blankets provided for the
hound's comfort divided by the amount of time spent on said fabric/bed/sofa
so lovingly provided by bassetslave or in some cases staff of basset slaves.
I don't know about every other place in the country but in Western
Pennsylvania we have been experiencing layers of snow, ice, rain, to the extreme
that there was not enough time to pick up some of the doo doo that happened
between the layers of weather. Boy do I dread the thaw!!

The Out of Africa Hounds (Coco, Piper and Whisky) and Momslave Karen
would like to thank all their Drool Friends for the condolences and
good wishes on the passing of their DadSlave Andrew on the 27 January
2009.

We are all a bit numb and shellshocked at the moment as Andrew was not
ill at all and was a fit and healthly, 43 year old and the fact that
he had a massive heart attck in the Doctors surgery where he had gone
for his annual checkup was a massive shock.

We are surrounded by family and friends at the moment and appreciate
all of your good wishes and Drool.

I will try to answer all messages personally but if i miss anyone, apologies.

Much Love and Drool and Thanks

Karen, Coco, Piper and Whisky (who know Dadslave is gone, they smelt
him on my clothes, I think)

I have seen Charter's commercial trash talking bassets.? When I saw it the
first time and heard the comment "slower than a basset hound", the
basset 500 was in full swing.? We? have Charter for cable service not
internet.?? I received a call over the weekend from Charter asking if I was
interested in their internet service.? I told the representative that I found
their latest commercial offensive.? Before I could continue, the basset 500
began..

Robert,

Thanks for the very clear method of judging a houndie's weight. Your
directions are much less vague than the usual, "You should be able to feel
your dog's ribs."

In case anyone missed it, here's a synthesis of Robert's comments:

1. Clench your hand in a fist.
Feel the knuckles on the back of the clenched fist.
If your dog's ribs feel like that, he needs to gain some weight.
2. Open your hand.
Feel the knuckles on the palm side of your open hand.
If your dog's ribs feel like that, he's overweight.
3. Open your hand.
Feel the knuckles on the back of your open hand.
If your dog's ribs feel like that, his weight is about right.

I watched the video of the one hound... and next to it on U tube was
some puppies.. so I thought I would watch it. Obviously a backyard
breeder,, the mom walking around with the puppies and then yelling to
the puppies to get ahold of mom teats so they can be dragged around by
the mom.. how lovely.
There is a ton of education that needs to be done.

I called a craig list baby basset give up (breeders aren't allowed to
post) so he said he was giving the pup up.. but there are two of them..
and it becomes obvious he is a breeder.. he says there are no bassets in
the shelters. Then I started. But it was on deaf ears.. I hate Craig's
List..

Kacy, Karen,

We already have a surrender application in our system for this pup, and
several prospects for forever homes! Gloria will be working with the family
today to get the bio, pics and health records so we can put her up on our
website.

Kacy, I hope your sister comes to the July 4th Parade in Novato - Golden
Gate holds its annual Waddle, with around 100 hounds waddling down Grant
Avenue, and a picnic at Marion Park Baseball Field at the end of the Parade
route!

Karen, great of you to offer to foster. We know you have your hands full,
but it's great to know you are there in an emergency for us!

Thanks for posting on this!!

Addy
