a few years ago one of the other lists had a discussion of a kind of
fly-eating bee.  they don't sting and they get rid of flys.  A
horsey friend of mine confirmed they are used around stables all the
time.  You can order the bees mail-order.  I found this
reference to them on a horse site:  "Arbico Organics in Tucson,
Ariz., which markets the wasps under the tradename Fly
Eliminators."  Worth looking at anyways

And the
recipe for Blue Power Ear Treatment:
16 Oz. Isopropyl
Alcohol 
4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder 
16 Drops Gentian
Violet Solution 1% 
Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.
