There has been a good deal of discussion among Show Breeders regarding
Glaucoma in our Bassets.
And researchers are trying to find a DNA marker for Glaucoma.

But in the meantime there are tests that Basset owners can have done
to minimize the eventual loss of sight and/or eye(s).
One test is a simple pressure test that most local Vets can do. This will
find infections such as Uveitis even if you dog does not have symptoms.

There is also an Angle test called a Gonioscopy that measures the drainage
openings in the back of the eye. This test is usually done by an Ophthalmologist.
While a high percent of open angle can not guarantee your dog will never develop
Glaucoma it is the best test Breeders and Basset owners have.

You do not have to wait for a high pressure test to have a Gonioscopy done on your dog.

Having the eyes checked on a relatively young dog can help prevent or minimize problems as
your dog ages.
