  LOL!  We use a padlock and key, and believe me, I understand what you say about being able to find the key! I do not trust anyone to not open the gat and leave it open,  or let a hound out on their way in,  even other bassets people.  I am just that way when it comes to these guys.  We even put a security gate on the front,  not for any crime in teh area,  more so to have a defense against a hound slipping by.  We live on a very busy street where people routinely go 40-50 even though it is posted at 25.

  Miss Becky was a little stinker when young and when a male dog came to gate she rattled gate open. I tried many things (kids sometimes opened it too) so I put a padlock with key to keep her home.
  It worked as long as I could find the key.
