Our beloved Earl (ATB) had a spleen tumor when he was a senior and I regret
having the surgery still. He survived the surgery but afterwards never
walked again and started having uncontrolable seizures. He was, however,
having symptoms of something being wrong before the tumor was discovered
(refusing food which for him was unheard of). 

Maybe get an ultrasound so you'll know exactly what you're dealing with?? I
would certainly hesitate to do a major surgery on a 13.5 year old. Just MHO.
