Not really basset related, the dog we had at the time was dear little Abby
the Dachshund, but you'll enjoy this, something similar has happened to
almost everyone who has pets. Okay, my little Abby was not involved, and
Sister Dinah, our cat who was about 18 years old at the time was not
involved, but the rescued feral kittens. oh yes, they were always involved.
We had rescued and tamed this litter of feral kittens who were born under a
house, and on this Thanksgiving Day they were about 5 months old, so not
teeny-tiny, but nowhere near full grown (maybe weighed 4 pounds each), and
there were four, two boys and two girls.

This house was open plan, with kitchen open to dining area open to den. The
turkey was done, we took it out of the oven and put it on the big turkey
platter, and sat the platter on the table while we finished up the gravy and
other items. I had my back turned doing something, when DH yells, LOOK AT
THEM - so I turned around and saw the two girls sitting on the floor
cheerleading as the two boys were up on the table stealing the turkey, which
was at least 18 pounds and straight-from-the-oven hothothot.

The boys had it off the platter onto the table and were about to shove it
off the table edge onto the floor, they were heading straight for the pet
door, so I yelled STOP THAT at the top of my lungs and we both rushed to the
table and rescued the bird. I can still see those kittens, man oh man, they
had struck gold and that bird was THEIRS and they were headed for the door!!
It was totally hysterical, and is still one of our best Thanksgiving
memories of all time. If that bird had been just a little bit cooler, we
would have been eating frozen dinners that Thanksgiving Day. And no, we
didn't mention it to our company when they arrived. Hey, it never actually
hit the floor.
