I agree it is an excellent idea to know how to help our pets, friends and family with basic first aid.

As a trained first-aider for workplaces, I would just sound a little caution about the Heimlich maneuver. 

By all means use it if you need to, it can save lives, but I have been taught that if you do use it, your paitient should see a doctor afterwards as it can cause internal injuries.

I am grateful I have never had to, and admire Karen's calmness in dealing with a potentially life-threatening situation.
