In my house we call this Wagger-itis!
Have you considered a couple of doses of prednisone?  It relieves swelling and inflammation, and might be the solution.  This happens to my dogs every so often, and if they were showing, I would consider trying this.  It is so painful for the first 3-4 days that you can't even touch it.  Maybe reducing the swelling and pain would help him lift it proudly.
