I posted the following a few years ago~ Ms.Brandy has been gone over a year now. And I no longer use clippers- I use a dremel instead ( a cheaper version which has worked great and has done MANY nails). No need for the superglue or tissues LOL. But I still "hold" 'em down the same way. I have done lots of other bassets' nails the same way- there is only two that come to mind that I couldn't hold down that way...maybe if I eat some more of those cookies it'll help LOL.

>>>I have clipped Ms.Brandy's nails since she came to us at the tender age of 7 weeks . She is now 13+ yrs old. Though she came from a byb I don't think they traumatized her in any way in regards to nail trimming. She was well taken care of when we first met. Until a few years ago we never had a problem cutting her nails- she didn't like it- but it could get done. Then I had the vet do it when she just wouldn't let me anymore- they did try...three different times. Told me the only way they'd ever do them again was if she was put "under". I have tried the drugs, the peanut butter on the walls, the dremel, CBL's two people approach- NADA on all. Now I put her on her side and sit across her- my butt behind her back, my legs across her body ( this gives me the control to hold her down and still have two free hands.) Her head is on my left- don't think it matters though which way you have them as long as your butt is behind the back. A towel between the teeth and your thigh, will protect you from the teeth in case you have a biter. She still does not like this- shivers, turns purple and sometimes SCREAMS like I am pulling the nails rather than cutting them. I am now used to her act and can usually get her nails done in a few minutes. I know this stresses her out- but as it has to be done, for us this works. I also keep superglue on hand in case I cut the quick- stops the bleeding right away. A flashlight or booklight is helpful to see the quick on some of the nails- the black ones I just say a quick prayer before I clip :) A box of tissues is nearby too. Sometimes it helps to have a second set of hands for chest scritching...keeps the stress level down a bit. She sheds like crazy and nervous farts are guaranteed- please don't let her know I told you that! <<<
