I weighed in on the Dyson, but I forgot about the thing I use everyday and
would choose over the Dyson for simplicity.  I have a Shark cordless carpet
and floor sweeper.  It is Model V 1930 VX1 and costs $34.99 at Target, Sears
and Kohls.  I keep it charged in the closet and use it constantly.  This is
not the sort of thing that will deep vacuum your carpets, but it is great
for quick clean ups on bare floors and does a creditable job removing fur
from rugs.  It is light weight, easy to empty, and again, it seems that the
only hair that gets caught in the brush is mine. My only complaint would be
that the charger insertion on the vacuum is tough to fit, so I put a small
piece of tape on the side the faces up on charger end, and that solved the
problem.  It also has an "elbow" that bends to fit under furniture.  It is
also easy to disassemble and clean.
