You answered your own question with the word "Christmas".
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Yrs, the parties, the presents,
the turkeys, hams, extra people, breakfasts of eggs, bacon and hash browns,
chicken stews, pies, cakes, sausage and cheese, shrimp and dip.....candy,
cookies....kids dropping things, plates left out, trash stuffed too full....
These dogs are experts at scoring, and it only takes a little bacon grease,
or ham or pork roast to blow out an already touchy pancreas. Dogs that never
get human food suddenly get cheese and bits of ham, a piece of turkey skin,
a bit of salami....and whammo...they are really sick.
Dogs that get human food regularly are at risk all the time. Sooner or
later....it'll get them too.

The best food for dogs is either what you cook specifically for the dog, or
dog food. The best treats are those made specially for dogs.

I have dogs that can apparently eat anything without consequence but I have
also have dogs for whom one false bite lands them in deep trouble.
