Subject: Breeding ~ how does it work with Basset hounds?

Happy New Year all Droolers

I have been reading for months now and enjoy the Drool. I have learned much from everyone but have
not read anything yet about how Basset Hounds actually breed. I am asking because I have a 3 year
old male that is VERY handsome and many ladies have come to call but I am not sure how to go about
this! So, one day, a female and her owner came over and my dog was frothing from the mouth but
so afraid of the female (I think) he put his head in the recycle box and figured he was hiding out in there.
I tried everything I could think of: First we walked them together to get them used to each other, All
my dog would do was bark!! Oh great, call attention to yourself outside...lol Then we let them play in
the garage together, thought they could get acquainted and maybe he wouldn't be fearful. No such luck.
He was trying to hide. Then we put them outside in the run together, she wanted to play, he wasn't too
interested as he was standing behind the door wanting in. I am at a loss. This hound wants to hump
my Chihuahua daily and me too if I let him. Why isn't he interested in a female dog in heat? Then I
resorted to letting them in my house, which I found out was wrong to do as my house got dirty and
all the male would do was run around and cry? Does anyone understand this problem??? HELP.
Someone told me that Bassets don't breed alone, they need human help because they are short and
their bodies are long...is this true???? My goodness, I thought nature would take its course...So, I find
myself asking the Drool for advice. I noticed on all the Doctor programs on T.V. they ask embarrassing
questions so now I am asking experienced Droolers if anyone has breed their hound and how to do it?

Thanks very Much, Nancy
