We have found that closure seems to be very important to dogs.  From their
perspective it must be very frightening to have a pack member disappear
without a trace.  When a member of our pack goes to the bridge we always let
the rest of the pack see and smell what happened. We have observed that each
dog will smell the deceased pack member and then walk away briskly in what
we as humans would describe as a somber and serious manner.
