I've been told bassets should not use stairs.  We have a two story  
house and ours have not had problems except for Conrad who ruptured a  
disc last fall.  I would love to sell my house and get a single story  
ranch house.  Just don't let the hounds run up and down.  Also if they  
are carpeted it is much better as their feet have something to hold on  
to.  Our lower flight of stairs is tile and they do slip.  It's very  
dangerous when they start the basset 500
