Dear Brandie 
Well you are going to find lots of support here!  Getting rid of dogs is not an option for me.  I haven't been in a very severe situation as of yet (i.e., loss of job, home, etc) but probably even then I would be one of those homeless people with their dogs.  
Being in the animal health care industry I see WAY too many people give up their dogs like it's getting a new pair of shoes.  And then they are off to the pet store the next day for a NEW puppy! Like it's a new car! 
I think you are going to win this battle hands down.  I'm sure if you tell a realtor what you are looking for that they can help you.  It's all a matter of finding someone renting, who loves animals.  
Good luck and I'm sure everything will work out and you and your husband might start talking again!
