When I used to take my kids camping, I used to buy a super-size Garlic Powder at the bulk store. When we got to the campsite, I would sprinkle the garlic powder all around the campsite. We never had a problem with gnats, flies or mosquitos. We all smelled like garlic, but that was a small price to pay for an itch free weekend.
 
My sister used the Avon Skin-So-Soft spray on her dogs with no ill effects.
