i am leaving for 4 days in new orleans at the end of the month. i've made
arrangements with my neighbor upstairs to care for gus. this is a 2
family home with a yard and dog run; it'snot fenced in. and she has a chiquhua,
who loves to taunt gus and he her.
i leave the house at 8:30, come home at 1 to let him out and give a cuddle,
and then home for the night at 5. my nieghbor leaves at 6, doesn't come
home at lunch, but comes home for the day at 2. over the weekend, she's
here most of the time. he will be crated when she's gone to work, as he's
used to being crated while i'm at work. she'll take him upstairs with them
when she's home and he'll sleep up there (not in their bed, as he does with
me, but on his bed, which he knows, but left for the real bed about 2 months
 ago)
now, instead of anticipating a great 4 day weekend in one of my favorite
cities, i am overcome with anxiety about him thinking i've abandoned him. i
will miss him more than i ever knew i could, but i'm really worried that
he'll think he's been left, like his other 2 lives. i thought that it best,
despite other offers to take him, that if he stayed in his house, in his
yard, with his neighbors, he would know that i haven't gone forever. but, we
all know that he won't rationalize that.
i've already decided today to add another vacation day, so that when i come
home Sunday night, i can stay here all day monday, hoping to reassure him
that i'm home for good.
any suggestions how to make this easier? i've also thought i'll call him
a few times over the 4 days so he can hear my voice. am i
nuts??????????????? please advise, droolers. you guys know everything.
susan, loving slave to gus
gus-she better being me home some pralines!
