First, condolences and healing drool to all in need. I must start making a list, because I am sporadic in my reading, and I apologize if I miss anyone. This group means so much to me, and I have been given so much pleasure and advice, I hope I don't offend or disrespect anyone by missing a beat .
OK. Pano. Pumpkin had it just after she was spayed. She was about 6 months old. Dad, the Vet, was still with us, and he said just let her be. I was frantic however, but I trusted his skills, and Pumps got through it no problem. It was maybe a 2 week ordeal for her. ON THE OTHER HAND, after Jean Paul was neutered, HE HAD EXTEME PANO AND HAD IT UNTIL HE WAS 4 YEARS OLD. Dad was now ATB, having fun because no healing necessary, and having read so many warnings that Vet's advise procedures that would not be necessary, I avoided taking JP in, which in retrospect I regret, because, at least I could have gotten him pain relief. JP has mild arthritis, and I have been giving him Cosequin DS for several years. Nigel had to have a surgical remedy for his limps at 7 months, but his case was not pano, it was ununited Anoconeal process. I almost wish I have a looking glass to say whether this surgery was for Nigel's greater good or not, because while he has no limps now, he does have a behavioral deficit that I hugely regret. His entire puppyhood was ruined by back to back surgeries which may well have not been necessary, but I was new to the drool then, lost my Dad, Mom was starting her dementia, house full of hounds, and I truly trust my Vet who recommended the specialist. Also, one person on the drool said her hound had it, and she did not do the surgery, and her hound was (7 years ago) an almost cripple, and that was what turned the page for me.
My thoughts turn to those in transition, particularly Maggie Honnold and the Pauls. Please don't forget them, and while they can always use some $$$, sometimes, just a kind word means just as much.
Hugs and Love,
Jackie, Pumpkin, Jean Paul, Pierre jr., Jellybean, Nigel, Colette, Max, Little Nikki, and Pierre Sr. ATB forever in my heart
