"When I was a kid I was taught that one day when I am ATB, my life will be displayed for all to see. I learned from an early age to "Smile for the  
camera".  I do that multiple times a day in rescue.
"Our new puppies are all sick and we can't afford it, we'd like to donate  
them to rescue" Smile.
"My dog got hit by a car again, I can't pay the vet, will you take her?"  
Smile.
"We're moving and the new house has white carpet, we obviously can't take  
the dog" (what about the kids?) Don't say that out loud - just "smile for 
the  camera".
"Please waive the adoption fee, we can buy 6 months worth of food for that  
dog" (and what happens in week #7?) Smile."
