Yes it is true there is a study out there done in 1984 with goats about the toxin PERSIN consuming Avocado leaves and and the Guatemalan variety sold in stores. The toxin was found and the skin and leaves.  I would not suggest you feed those to dogs

The tree I have is the CA variety.  I dont usually feed it to the boys as Speedy got fat and looked like he was on 'roids last month. I do believe it was the avocados he consumed. These were eaten without my knowledge as I was only able to find the pit of them.  Last month I was on the search of the fruit- mainly cuz I wasnt able to eat any this time around and the other so that Speedy would stop blowing up like a ballon.  

As with any, yes do be careful with what you feed ur beloved 4-legger.  Speedy has been eating them for at least 2 yrs now behind my back,  the only consequence is his getting fat and having a very healthy coat.  But do be careful in feeding them to yours dogs.
