[Dailydrool] question

When in doubt or seeking information, my rule is come to the drool.  I've written before about our fairly new Basset, Sir Winston and here we are again. I know some of you have had Bassets with really tender tummies and that seems the case here.  He is eating well now, but ends up with diahrea, can never spell that word, often. He get boiled chicken and rice, then we added some canned dog food, expensive kind, chicken and rice, and finally were adding kibble.  Again, the kind recommended by Dawn of the West.  Vet gave us meds for the frequent loose, runny stools. Meds work, but I hate to keep him on those. so we went back to plain chicken, rice and pumpkin. Get him back to normal, start adding back in. canned food first. whoops.  so start again. This time no canned food but adding small amounts of kibble.  progressing well. then suddenly the D again. I let him lick my plate the night before. maybe a tablespoon of Beef juice and some soy sauce from
my dinner. Could that be enough to kick in the D again? Might probiotics help. They do for people. He's been on pumpkin for several weeks now.

Thanks for your help,
Lauraine, Wayne and Sir Winston.  Chewie ATB, Woofer ATB

I had read somewhere that Blueberries were a great source of Antioxidants and of a breeder who gave them to her dogs at least on a weekly basis if not daily.I have never heard they were bad for dogs. Has anyone else heard anything for/ or against?

I like the creative names that some of you have come up with.  My favorites are those that have Basset pairs and their names go together.  Like:
Brudders Jake & Elwood
Lizzy & mr. Darcy
Colt & Ruger wait those or mine.  Hehe.

I like the creative names that the slaves come up with that go with the dogs personality and love to hear the story behind the names. My pea brain can't come up with any at the moment.

I also like Chunky, Nigel, Bazzle the Bedeviling

If I ever get another Basset brother pair I'd name them Peyton & Eli after my favorite football QB and his QB brother. (colt is named after the team and the pistol) or name them Dr. Jekyle and Mr. Hyde.

Love and drool to all

Hi all, Cyrus here,

Lately I've been left in charge of Snoopy and we've had a few mishaps and I'd
like to ask for some advise.

The day before last one of the girls didn't close the cabinet in the kitchen
where the people keep trash all the way.? Well Snoopy got in there and pulled
out the trash bag and spread it all over the floor and started EATING it.?
Seriously.? EATing trash.? Well I told him that was unsafe and unsanitary and
unacceptable.? Can you believe he kept right at it?? And he left a BIG mess and
momPerson was NOT happy with either of us ... but I told him, I really did.

And then yesterday the housekeepers gathered up all the trash from the house
while cleaning and they had left the bag in the entry way .... and guess what??
I TOLD Snoopy ... LEAVE IT?? LEAVE IT .... but noooo ... he slit the bottom of
the bag and made a big mess and ate some and they had to clean the whole living
room and entry way again AND momPerson was (is?) very worried that he might have
eaten something that isn't good for him or else is easier to get in than to get
out.

And then last night they went to the baseball game in San Francisco and left
BEFORE dinner time.? They fed me ... and a scant dinner for Snoopy who's belly
was already kind of full from all the trash.? He got fed early and missed his
walk and had his schedule upset and I had to watch him all night.? When the
people came home my whole back was soaked with drool because I had to cuddle him
the whole time he was so upset.

Any and all advise will be much appreciated.

Exhausted Cyrus

I just subscribed to the drool. My basset Buddha is a little over 2 years
old. I love him! He's the first basset I've had and they are amazing dogs.
Funny, loyal, affectionate, silly. He fits right in with his two Scottie
pack!  Looking forward to other basset lovers stories, tips, and tricks.

Have you ever seen those movies or tv shows set in the old days where there aren't painkillers and people are given a stick to bite on when they are in pain? I think Edmond watched a western with his dad and has applied it accordingly.

You see when I get home after work Edmond goes a little crazy.. I wouldn't call it a dance persay, but there is a lot of butt wiggling, prancing, and flopping over to "bicycle pedal" (as I have dubbed it). It also used to involve his big houndie barks and occasional wrist chewing. Whenever he did this, the bell rubs would stop until he quieted back down.

During his anxiety solving days, we got him a big rawhide chew stick that he only gets when we leave. do you see where this is going? So now when I get home, he hears the keys, grabs the chew sticks and goes through  his momma is home routine, but with the chew stick in his mouth. He emits his little yelps and high pitched squeals (which are fine) but won't drop the rawhide. It looks like he is holding it there to keep himself from barking and to keep the bellyrubs coming. It works perfectly!

He is such a smart little pooch!!

Love and drool to everyone!

Kimi & Edmond Dawd

P.S. Over here in Portland, we would be glad to take any of the sunshine and heat you have to spare...

I got a call this morning at 8:15am saying Buster did good yesterday he seems very laid back just taking in everything they are doing to him and around him he is very mellow!
The vet tech said Buster had just been put under anesthesia for his surgery so he was tolerating the anesthesia well and I will get a call back around 4pm this afternoon to tell us how he did. They usually wait to call after they wake up.
I have a job interview at 4:30 today so I will let you know what is going on with Buster as soon as I can.
I am not sure about this interview it is a sales job with MP Incorporated they are a fairly new company ( I only read one bad review online about them) and they have the contract with AT&T to sell their products. I am not a sales person and someone told me this could be a scam but I need a job so I am going to the interview.
Send drool for Buster I will let you know how he is doing as soon as I can.

We have been lurking for a while now but read the Drool faithfully.  We are sending Healthy Drool for all in need and have been faithfully lighting our new Bridge Candle in remembrance of all those who have journeyed on to the Rainbow Bridge and send Heart Comforting Drool to all those that are left behind to grieve the loss.

So here is our great news!  First Fabulous Freddie is now 6 months with no sign of the melanoma returning.  Freddie will be going to meet his new mom, Vanna is just 8 days.  Vanna has set up the bed so Freddie will be able to sleep with her and take up 3/4 of the bed.  She is the perfect mom and the home that I have always dreamed of for Freddie.  There will be many tears but most will be happy tears as my dreams for Freddie are being fulfilled.  Freddie and I thank everyone that has helped him on his journey from the darkness into the light.  With everyone's support, prayers and drool we have now have a healthy, happy hound boy who has his Furever Home that will love him for the rest of his life.

If you could spare of bit of Calming drool for my Nelly Belle it would be much appreciate.  I will have surgery to remove the hardware from my ankle tomorrow (Thank doG! and no drool needed as this is one surgery I am so looking forward to!) and Nelly does not do well when I am away overnight.  While she is much better about my daughter coming in "her house" she doesn't do well with change and she is a true Mommy's Girl.  I envision my little senior gal being close to my side while I recover.  She will be playing the part of Nurse Nervous Nelly Belle.

Droolz,
Karen and The Dog House Gang with the Kitty Korner
With our foster basset and soon to be adopted, Fabulous Freddie

HHBR was told of Cassie, an 11 yr. old senior Basset, being in a shelter in
Southern KS. At 11 her owners surrendered her to the shelter when they were
moving & the new landlord would not allow them to bring their pets =(
Cassie's story spread across Facebook & this is where HHBR learned of her
need for rescue..how could we ever say no to that sweet girls face. As
everyone knows seniors are not the easiest hounds to place, they have more
medical needs than the young ones, they wait longer for their forever homes
& most often just end up becoming rescue's "forever fosters". Well sweet
Cassie had some Angel's looking over her that day & through the FB grapevine
a family from IN fell in love with Cassie's plight for help & became very
interested in adopting her. Their only hurdle was the distance for them...at
over 11 hrs. one way & them not knowing how to get her pulled from the
shelter they didn't think it was a possibility to adopt her. A friend on FB
connected them with HHBR when she learned we were able to help and after
going through HHBR's adoption process & being approved in every way they are
welcoming Sweet Cassie home this weekend!

Now here's the tough part..the shelter labeled Cassie as in "good health
with no concerns". HHBR of course anticipates every senior we pull needing a
routine dental, blood work ,etc. to get them on the right track to
healthiness...but Sweet Cassie has more health issues than initially thought
& we're in need of some Angel's for Cassie.

Cassie came into the shelter infested with fleas, the shelter offered her
Frontline to start killing them but this flea infestation has left her coat
in horrible condition. She also had severe dental needs & had to have 2
teeth removed along with a good cleaning. She also came with one of the most
horrid urinary tract infections...one that had clearly been with her for
quite some time & has surely caused her some pain ='( She is now on 2
different types of oral antibiotics for the skin & UTI. She also had some
large skin tags & bumps removed...along with all the minimal vetting she
needs like Rabies, HW test, HW preventative, fecal, etc. her total vet bill
is close to $400 & this is a total with a generous 50% rescue discount! The
adopters of course will pay an adoption fee but $400 is unreasonable to
request for a senior's adoption fee!

HHBR has taken in a couple of senior & medically needy hounds in the past
few months & our funds are running low. We're hoping we can fundraise some
of Cassie's vet expenses to help offset some of the costs!

Just got the call from the veterinary teaching college and Buster came through surgery just fine. He just came out of anesthesia 1 hr ago so he is still sleepy and not awake yet but his surgery went well. They put two plates in his leg no screws no hardware so the plates will not be as uncomfortable and patients heal faster with them. He did very well and they will call me in the morning around ten to let me know if he is able to get around with his new leg. Thank you so much for helping him, giving him the chance to walk pain free. You have given him a special gift. He is a very fortunate dog to have so many people caring about him. He has no idea how many good people there are out there since all he has known is the family who abused him and rescue. Thank you agin and I will keep you informed of his progress.
Also thank you for the well wishes on my job interview I think it went well, and it is not a scam it is selling AT&T U-Verse. AT&T outsources the selling of U-Verse to companies and provides them with leads they have gotten from mailings, ads, etc. I think they are looking for a younger hipper group of people not a granny that's only hips are the fat ones at the top of her legs. LOL

This is the fourth time I have typed this.  Halloween must be early this
year.  This computer is haunted or something.  Very soon it is going to be
flying almost like a witch on a broom.  That will come later.  Ask my
children.  They make lots of comments about my witch powers.

Ninja showed her good obedient side this afternoon. Ninj is usually about as
sweet as a dill pickle.  She obeys me but doesn't like anyone else.  She
left a plate of chicken bones when I yelled at her and came to me.  No bones
were eaten. I could not believe that she would leave such a treat.  Marley
or Shelby would have scarfed first, looked sheepish second.  They would not
have abandoned their ill gotten gains.

Shelby is quite a garbage scrounge.  She will go through an unattended
garbage bag and lay it our piece by piece.  My boys tend to be slow when
they are asked to do things like take out the trash.  Bags get set down and
bassets find treasure.  Lots and lots of treasure.  Shelbs is very
meticulous with her garbage.  She doesn't really eat it, just takes it out
and gives it the sniff over.  We don't get on her about it, just pick it all
up and haul it out.  Once in a while someone actually turns over a trash can
and spreads it around but not very often.

Marley is very sad right now.  The DH just left to go visit his parents for
a few days.  She is a daddy's girl and is wandering around looking for him
or any unattended food.  She will mope until he comes back.  She is so
grumpy looking but is really a sweety when someone massages her little
hairs.  She may be howling before the night is through.

We are sending drool and snooters to all in need.  Ninja, Marley, Maggie and
Shelby with the mom

Wow, have I been a bad momma to not write in sooner! Emma's first 'Gotcha
Day' was August 1. Yes, this skinny, shy little thing has been here in the
cold north for a year! She's now 48 lbs, and eating like she's starving!
That's 10 lbs more than she was last year! She's still got hips, so I don't
think she's 'fluffy' yet, but she's definitely solid, hehe! Had to carry her
back to the apartment more than once, so I can say with certainty that she's
quite solid!!

Had a session w/a pet communicator this evening. I won a gift card for it
from the MI waddle (which she says she loves coming to!) it was interesting
to hear what the hounds said!

When asked who was peeing in my room, the communicator said they got dead
silent, and Emma finally said "well, I'm not taking ALL the blame!" And,
Joey said the destruction was fun, and he's a smart@$$! HIS OWN WORDS! He
says that he gets bored, and causing destruction is fun! The little
butthead! He also told her that I need to follow through on threats, and be
firm! So, from here on out, I guess that they get no treats if they're bad!
Also, when we asked them to knock it off, they said they needed to have a
meeting about it! How's that for sassy?

Joey said he's closer to 8 yrs old, than 9, which is good, I was fearing he
was getting too old too quickly, haha. Emma said that she was 8 1/2-ish. The
good thing is, they both report being happy & healthy & that the love me.
Joey said that he is afraid I'll leave him & never come back, or I'll send
him somewhere & never come back. The boy has issues! He says I need to let
him know ahead of time where I'm going, how long it'll be, what I'll be
doing, etc. (the communicator commented that he was really nosy!) He also
said that Emma entertains him, so he likes her. He actually said that 'she's
funny, and he enjoys that'! Typical kid! They both said they destroy things
because they can, and it's fun! Little brats! They also apparently were
worried I was going to be having another dog, no clue where they got that
from...

Emma said that she misses being warm (she's from a bit further south, some
droolers helped in her transport last year), but she doesn't want to go
back, and she's adjusting. I won't go into details, but Emma said that her
'owners' were the cause of her crooked front leg, and that she ran away from
them, and they were NOT the ones who left her at the vet's office. But, she
was glad that the people who found her did, and that she was glad the people
helped to get her here.

On a much happier note, Emma said she doesn't understand how the toys work,
or what to do with them, but she likes them at the park, and she likes
trying to play with the other dogs. (She also said she has enough toys!
She's such a diva, I was surprised about that!) She also said that she
wanted to move her celebration to April, and that she liked April. I'm
guessing it was about her Gotcha Day, because the communicator asked about
birthdays, and said that Emma is asking if it can be moved to April...
That's an easy request! She also said that she likes getting hugs!

It was interesting, to say the least. I have been wondering what was
floating around inside those headbones, and that totally fit both of their
personalities to a "T," and also, the communicator had no background info on
them other than photos & that they were bassets. So, it was interesting to
hear what she repeated that they said.

There will never be another basset like the Late Great Homer from
Pittsburgh...aka Homer of the East.  I think Homer is a great name for a  basset.

Some of Bill James' entertaining stories from the early days of the
Daily Drool are on the server of my husband, Allan Der.
http://www.allan-der.com/tbo/index.html When Bill died, Allan and I
put together a memorial for Bill, who was a dear friend. Since the
website has continued to generate hits through the years, Allan has
left it on his server.  Bill's Basset was Miss Molly. Bill had a
beard and signed his posts TBO for The Bearded One. He called his
Basset Miss Molly V.Q. (virgin queen).
