[Dailydrool] Hot Spots

We've dealt with hot spots here. Not so much with the bassets, but my Great Pyrenees got some pretty legendary ones. My grandlab gets them plenty too. I always shave the area down to the skin because they need to be dry. That means all the fur around it. If they lick at the fur, or they're goopy, they mat the fur and they can't dry up. If they're very small I wash them with anti-bacterial soap, towel them off and watch them dry up. An oral anti-histamine can keep the edge off, but only if vet approves. All this being said, I probably only have a 50% success rate without a trip to the vet for a shot of steroid for relief and possibly some oral meds. They burn and they itch and they can make little droopy dogs miserable, along with grandlabs and Great Pyrenees. Also if you shave the area and you notice little red bumps in outlying areas, go to the vet. It's already trying to develop into an infection and will need some additional tending. There may be
other ways of dealing with them, but this is the only one that's worked for me.
Janet, Yogi, Carlie Jane, Dolly, Bernie, Bunny, and Butters the Labrador (why don't I ever have any fur on my poor little head?)
