[Dailydrool] For the Love of Bassets

I have been reading the Drool for a little over 4 years, just after my Sherlock died. He was the most wonderful wuss of a basset I have ever known. I don't know where I learned of the drool, only that I love reading about all the antics of the hounds. I look forward to each and every digest and am always disappointed if a day goes by without one. I read them all and ocasionally post about the girls who are all snoring at the moment. I, too would like to thank EVERYONE who pays for, moderates and posts to the drool. I love all of the stories, poems and even the memories of all the hounds at the bridge. Reading about the bassets always makes my day brighter.

I don't know why I love bassets. I have always wanted to have them and finally got my wish in 1983. I was such an ignorant slave. I was soon owned by two of the most beautiful basset girls who ever lived. They were from champion stock. They were the beginning of a basset adventure that I hope never ends. I love their shape, the ears, the whacking great paws(as the town crazy lady put it in England where the first two came from), their wrinkles and everything else about their stinky, hairy selves.

I had bassets before kids. My boys have grown up with drool, hair, muddy paws and all the love in the world coming from the girls and one male basset. It is a family affair here. While I don't think anyone else here loves them like I do, the DH and kids have been kind enough to tolerate me and the bassets for a very long time. I hope my boys will always be kind to animals and bassets in particular. There may be a corgi in the future of one of them and that's ok too.

I would love to have a whole herd of hounds, but we live in town and are over our limit now. I want to live somewhere that I am not afraid that the barking will upset the neighbors. Maybe someday.

I've even grown to love the boys(cats) bequeathed to me by my son. He thinks he is getting them back. But I know better. Tonight, Davinci was head butting Maggie. He does this when he wants someone to notice him. I guess he didn't realize that she could have swallowed him in one gulp. Davinci is a very small cat, probably about 5 pounds. Maggie is a very big basset, around 80 pounds. They were so cute. Davinci got distracted and ran off. Maggie liked it I think. She would love a buppy to romp with but we just cannot add any more confusion to the mix.

I love the Drool no matter what gets posted. No one is forcing me to read anything. We are all human and as such, imperfect. All of us. Sometimes we forget that. EVERYONE makes mistakes. I have learned so much from all the Drool posters and intend to learn a lot more.

A big thank you goes our to all of you who create and share on the drool. The Southern Illinois Girls appreciate everyones' efforts.

Julie with Ninja--who is keeping watch over me so no bad guys will get me (or other bassets in the vicinity), Marley, who has been using the bricks at the bottom of the fireplace for a pillow and has an avacado peel in her bed(no idea why), Maggie who would love to play with the cats or any other four legged creature that is handy, and Shelby who is still walking and taking care of business in spite of her blindness and sometimes draggy back end. There is an incredible amount of love here and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

One more note: I really feel for the family of the baby who was bitten. Nic was bitten by Sherlock in the face when he was 3. He had to have stitches. We kept Sherlock and realized it was Nic's fault. He wanted to give old Sherlock a hug and he was asleep. Didn't work out to well. Sherlock became a registered biter and that was a pain. He never bit anyone else except for Sunny when she was being a B. Children should never be left around dogs unsupervised. Especially little ones. They make a lot of noise and do things that dogs think are directed at them when they may not be. I hope it all works out and Fred will get a chance to live where he won't have to deal with little ones. Just my 2 cents worth.
