Hi Everyone
Xaxa is starting to get a little better everyday. I don't know if it is the
new meds the doc added or the CoQ10 that a dear drooler suggested or both
together. Many of you pray and everybody send drool. This mix has made him
getting a little stronger.
I cannot evaluate because (I don't know if you all know), I don't live with
dadperson anymore so I know what he tells me. But he is happy, saying that
some thing he eats, the ones that he loves. And today was barking and
showing more general strength.
Please, continue to pray and drool for Xaxa. I don't know if I believe (like
dadperson does) that he can get better and still spend another summer with
us. At his age, I think that we cannot ask him for more than he can give.
But we never know.
Thanks for all the drool, prayers and love you guys have sent us. We really
appreciate it.
We send lots of drool to those who need.
Virginia, Xaxa. Violeta and da Dad

Hi Virginia, I have had limited experience with this but it is such a hard
decision.
With Corky it was not so difficult to know "when". Corky was a mixed breed
terrier that we had gotten at the pound when he was just 8 months old.
Corky had seizures all his life, even on medication. he also had various
allergies. Despite all that he was a happy little dog. By the time he was
14 his medication was as high as the vet would go. He was still having
seizures and then his rear went and he couldn't stand. He just looked so
sad.
My Sam, my 1st Dachshund, was much harder for me. He had blown a neck disc
at 5, had surgery, and made a full recovery. He started getting getting
arthritis in his spine at 9 and the next few years it was a balancing act
between keeping him out of pain and the pain meds destroying his
gastro-instential tract.
When he was whimpering in pain in his sleep I knew I wasn't being fair to
him. He was 12.
My decisions were based on the dog's quality of life. Dog's are not people
and can't think about what tomorrow may bring. They think in the "now".
Living for today is one of the beautiful concepts we appreciate our dogs for
teaching us. It is only right that we remember that concept when treating
our dogs for medical problems.
Nature has a way of letting us know when it is time to go. Even human
elderly will stop eating and just want to let go. (For good or ill our
human doctors will try and force nutrition).
Base your decision of the cues Xaxa is sending you and your husband and his
quality of life.
If Xaxa's not eating is due to his overall failing, I would try to entice
him, like your doctor said, anything he wants. You could try Slippery Elm
or Marshmellow to help the stomach but at this stage I doubt that would
help.
I know too many people who's old dogs get thinner and thinner while they try
cooking this and that trying to get the beloved dog to eat.
Our beloved hounds have such dignity and joy in life. We need to let them
have dignity in death.
Cathy
