I want to thank everyone so much for your sweet words of sympathy and
condolences on the loss of Oliver. I hope to thank all of you personally. I
know so many of you have been through this and know well the pain of grief. I
have finally been able to put together some words of tribute and have developed
a slideshow for Oliver.

Oliver Amos Higgins bounced into my life on July 1, 2000. He squeaked
all the way home – But once he arrived he transformed my life. He was
easy to house train and was never destructive. Other than that, he
wasn’t too interested in training. We went to obedience school and he
did graduate – but, let’s just say he was at the top of his class!
Fetch was never his thing-what is the point? Even as a pup he was distracted
after 2 throws. He loved rawhide bones, his orange bone, ham bones, jawbones,
etc… See a pattern? He loved his yard, his house, his bed and his
couch. He loved walks, but only at his own pace. At the dog park he was often
off in the bushes with only the white tip of a tail visible. I worked so hard
to give a proper name to my proper hound. But at the park, he ignored me.
(Leaving me to believe that it doesn’t matter what you name your basset
hound, he won’t listen anyway.) And did I mention that he liked food
– anything within reach was fair game. When I had dinner parties it
could be embarrassing. Actually, just a few weeks before he died, the stole an
entire bread bowl full of spinach dip during a Christmas party. I could go on
and on about the life and times of Oliver – the original Pill!

He was happy until the end. On New Years Eve I had some friends over.
We sat around the table and talked. Oliver tried to score some chicken nuggets
(he was thwarted). And laid down by my side. We rang in the New Year. Oliver
was fine. As I started to get ready for bed I looked for him. He was under the bed. He wouldn’t come out and I soon realized
he was unresponsive. My sister and a friend came help get him to the vet. I
was crying. I was sure he was gone. When we got to the vet, Oliver stood up
and looked at me. The vet checked him out, his eyes focused on me and he wagged
his tail. I left him for observation (the vet suspected a heart problem). But
I expected to pick him up in the morning. The vet called about an hour later.
My sweet boy went into cardiac arrest and was gone by the time I got there. I
believe that he revived at the vet just enough to say goodbye to me…only
I did not know it was goodbye. He left as he came, with a bounce. My sister
said, “He died as he lived, on his own terms…” So very
true. I will miss my sweet boy. He will always be a part of me. I
can’t count the blessings he brought me and I am so thankful that the
Lord allowed that wonder piece of creation to be a part of my life 10 years,
and a part of my heart forever.
