Utah Friends of Basset Hounds has been battling this since last fall. It is most likely canine influenza. Has kennel cough symptoms, but is much worse and often turns into pneumonia. We have had emergency vet bills this spring for several dogs with pneumonia, as it went through our main foster home and our boarding kennel facility. It is extremely dangerous.

>From Wikipedia:

"Symptoms of the mild form include a cough that lasts for ten to thirty days and possibly a greenish nasal discharge. Dogs with the more severe form may have a high fever and pneumonia. Pneumonia in these dogs is not caused by the influenza virus, but by secondary bacterial infections. The fatality rate of dogs that develop pneumonia secondary to canine influenza can reach 50 percent if not given proper treatment.

If your dog has kennel cough symptoms, get them to the vet if they stop eating or have a temperature.

We received a grant
for flu vaccine, which we are administering, hoping it helps a little. However, the vets say it is like human flu--it only makes the case somewhat lighter, and sometimes they don't hit the right strain of virus.

If you read up on this, it is supposedly all over the country or will be soon. Here is the full Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_influenza. If you want even more info, just search for Canine Influenza.
