My Buster T Frecklefeet Age 7 , ( Basset Hound ) has for the past year been under veterinarian care for pseudomonas ear infections in both ears. These infections started about a week after he had his teeth cleaned at another vet ,(I chose to go with a vet who was charging me less than my regular vet ). We have either been to or talked about to numerous specialists ,including a dermotologist,a holistic vet and the many vets my vet has posted on a community board for vets. We have had Buster on many different treatments , chloremphenical, BCP Otic ,Posatex,Ceftazidime,Amakacin ,(injectable, as well as ear drops) Temaril -P ,weeks of Trizedta with Amakacin, Simplicef, Burrows solution with Silvadene cream,Triz Ultra /ceftazidime/Dexamethasone solution, Baytril ,Pellitol, Mometomax, Zeniquin,Otomax, Surolan .Thyroid testing was negative. Ear cultures have been done three times. An ear flush was done to no avail. Food has been changed to Blue Whitefish and Sweet Potato. Buster takes an omega three vitamin once a day. Snacks are limited to vegetables and apples. He is on Tramadol for pain. he does get a teaspoon of plain yogurt a couple of times a week .
Buster came to me almost two years ago(breeder surrender from Kentucky ) with no problems as far as allergies or ears go ,happy healthy boy in every sense of the word . Buster has no skin problems what so ever ,none .
This has been a very long year for my boy and the answer to healing these ears , I hope is just around the corner. While the vet said on our most recent visit that there is very little bacteria in the ears ,he does has ulcers from the infections and constant treatment. His ears look wonderful except for the ulcers, vet always states that I have done an excellent job of keeping on top of Buster's treatment. She also does not think at this time he is a candidate for total ear ablation. Today when I called her to see what we can do next ,since the Surolan is not working ,she has suggested we try Atopica.
Trying to make this short, but it has been a long road for Buster.
What I am asking this wonderful community of Basset Hound lovers and experts is first, has anyone tried this Atopica?
Second, has anyone gone through this with their Basset Hound, and if so, (my heart goes out to you ) have you had a successful treatment plan ?
I look forward to any information you have to spare on or off the drool .
Thank you for the tremendous support you all offer to each other .
Cathy
